£500 is up for grabs in Commsworld’s Design a Mascot competition: help choose the winning North Lanarkshire entry in our online poll

Commsworld needs your help! The Scottish-based telecoms provider is holding a poll to decide who should be the winner of its latest North Lanarkshire competition – and a £500 prize.

The company, in partnership with the charity SmartSTEMs and North Lanarkshire Council, is hosting the online poll of entries from Kier Hardie Primary School, Holy Family Primary School, St Mary’s Primary School, and Thornlie Primary School.

To choose which one is the best, you need to head to Commsworld’s own website or look out for its social media posts on Facebook, X and LinkedIn.

The poll is the result of its latest workshops organised by Commsworld and SmartSTEMs across a host of primary schools in the region. The workshops are aimed at encouraging youngsters to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Workshop co-ordinators, in order to introduce the pupils to the imaginative side of design and tech, asked them to dream up their very own Commsworld mascot. The result was an explosion of creativity, with each school coming up with their own winners.

The designs were all so fantastic that Commsworld and SmartSTEMs decided to put up a £500 prize for the best one overall. They also put each entry through AI to transform them from, drawings into life-like digital characters.

However, they just couldn’t agree on which one was the overall champion – so they want you the public to vote in the poll, which is a shortlist of four.

As well as a £500 prize for the school, the winning pupil and runners-up will receive a special print of their AI-designed mascot, as well as other special prizes.

Sam Reymbaut, Commsworld Account Director, said: “We were all extremely impressed with the very special designs we received from some very talented pupils at our workshops. As a result, we found it impossible to decide which one was the stand-out mascot. That is why we’re asking the public to help us find the design that captures their heart the most.

“The workshops themselves were also a huge hit with pupils. They were all so enthusiastic about the internet and all things STEM. We hope that they use the workshops, and our competition, as inspiration to look to pursue a future career in STEM.”

Councillor Michael McBride, Convener of Education, Children and Families at North Lanarkshire Council, said: “We’re delighted to see pupils across North Lanarkshire taking part in this exciting and creative competition. Activities like these help bring learning to life, encourage digital skills and inspire young people to think differently about technology and design. We’re grateful to Commsworld and SmartSTEMs for working with our schools and providing such a positive opportunity for our pupils.”

Stuart Macdonald, Founder and CEO of SmartSTEMs, said: “There is a whole world of opportunity out there for pupils to become the next STEM leaders, and we are proud to play a role in helping them reach that goal through both the workshops and this wonderful Mascot competition. We cannot wait to see over the next two weeks which one the public chooses as their favourite.”

You can vote in the free poll here or go to the Commsworld page on Facebook, LinkedIn and X. The poll will be open for two weeks from today (Thursday 5th February).
