Q&A with our Employee of the Quarter - Ken McKnight

1. Can you tell us about your role at Commsworld and what your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

As with many here I could be described as a player / manager, with 21 engineers reporting directly & indirectly. The job ranges from technical to social work and everything in between.

2. How long have you been with the company, and what inspired you to join?

27 years - I had done a student placement as part of my Computer Science degree, with Zeneca in Grangemouth. I worked on desktop and network support. While there, I worked closely with the on-site BT engineer to deliver their PBX over the year (5000+ extensions). I applied for the job with Commsworld as the mix of computing with telecoms was appealing.

3. What’s your favourite part of your job?

Fixing things, problem-solving. Seeing large, sometimes apparently unmanageable projects, delivered.

4. Are there any big projects or achievements you’re particularly proud of?

Ive seen a few over the years. Getting CEC WAN live just in time was good. Cycling was, an experience, but many many smaller jobs too.

5. How do you collaborate with other teams or departments?

Pretty much everyone other than marketing, really.

6. How does it feel to be recognised as Employee of the Quarter?

It was an appreciated gesture for which I am grateful.

7. What do you think contributed to this achievement?

Im not sure. It was awarded following the longest absence of my career. Perhaps I should stay away more.

8. What’s one skill or lesson you’ve learned in your time here?

Keep calm, listen, DONT PANIC

9. If you had to describe your job in three words, what would they be?

Make it work

10. What’s something your colleagues/people might not know about you?

I am a beekeeper
