Q&A with our Employee of the Quarter - Kevin Goodwin

Can you tell us about your role at Commsworld and what your day-to-day responsibilities look like?

I work as a fibre splicer in the field, focusing on the core network infrastructure. While my day-to-day tasks vary, my main responsibility is ensuring the delivery of fibre connectivity to customers.

How long have you been with the company, and what inspired you to join?

Worked as a contractor for six months then was offered a full-time job about two and a half years ago. During my time contracting I really liked the way the company was run and thought it would be a good place to work. Small enough to feel like everyone knew everyone but big enough to compete for some big contracts.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

I really enjoy the diversity of working for Commsworld, the range of work we do for the size of businesses is excellent.

Are there any big projects or achievements you’re particularly proud of?

Being part of a small group to successfully delivery some big projects but one that I enjoyed most was the world cycling championships.

We had loads of challenges on this project and some tight timescales but we managed to achieve it from fort William to Scottish borders.

How do you collaborate with other teams or departments?

I have a good relationship with all other departments within the company but mostly work alongside our network department.

How does it feel to be recognised as Employee of the Quarter?

Its was a surprise to be nominated never mind winning it. It’s a good feeling to be recognised for some of the hard work I have put in over the last couple of years.

What do you think contributed to this achievement?

I think always being available to help others out whether its over the phone or out in the field. I’ve found that having a ‘can-do’ attitude really makes a difference.

What’s one skill or lesson you’ve learned in your time here?

I have worked in the telecoms industry for over 30 years and have to learn to move with the times. Commsworld had changed to blown fibre which was still quite new in the industry so had to learn new ways of preparing all different types fibre cable they use in our network.

If you had to describe your job in three words, what would they be?

Everyday is different.

What’s something your colleagues/people might not know about you?

I am a fully qualified, time-served City & Guilds-certified painter and decorator.
