Commsworld boosts presence in the North by joining NCL-IX internet exchange to complete UK first

Commsworld has boosted its presence in the North by joining NCL-IX, a new interconnection point for direct data transfer from the USA to Northern Europe, at the Stellium Datacentre in Newcastle.

The move means Commsworld, the UK’s largest independent network provider, has made history by becoming the first network operator to be present in every one of the UK’s eight internet exchanges – having already joined IXs in London, Manchester, Leeds, Wales and Scotland.

It also signifies the importance of the North as a target area as the company continues to expand throughout the UK following its recent investment in the region.

Commsworld’s commitment to join the fledgeling IX underlines its firm belief that NCL-IX will become a crucial transatlantic digital link, dramatically altering the UK’s internet infrastructure landscape. It will achieve this by connecting the area to data from subsea, national and regional networks – including Commsworld’s Optical Core Network –  ISP’s, content, and cloud.

Commsworld’s Optical Core Network offers service providers and carriers with high capacity wavelengths of 10GE, 100GE and 200GE and extensive on-net metro reach. With demands for higher bandwidth and data increasing, its on-net services will allow service providers to extend their network reach and capacity supplying high quality connectivity services to the market.

This will ensure the competitiveness of existing businesses in the Newcastle area, as well as attracting new ones to the city, as NCL-IX will enhance internet access without traffic transitioning to other parts of the country.

Charlie Boisseau, Commsworld’s Chief Technical Officer, said:“With the Aquacomms subsea cable landing at Stellium, we expect the IX will attract international Tier-1 transit networks to bring capacity over the new cable system into Newcastle.

“This will make a profound impact on the UK Internet Infrastructure landscape, as currently it only has internet transit from the south of England, via the English Channel, and crossing into the neighbouring datacentre and connectivity megapack in Ireland.

“The north of the UK doesn’t currently have meaningful connectivity, but now the physical cable exists, we simply need the business case for a major International network operator to light capacity over it.

“This new IX also means that through our Optical Core Network, Commsworld's customers in the North East, as well as the south of Scotland, will benefit from low-latency connections to other networks in the region, keeping traffic local, high quality and resilient.”

He added: “A good illustration of the impact of NCL-IX would be through Commsworld's connectivity services in the local area.  Without NCL-IX, that traffic would have to travel to one of the other UK peering points – most likely London. With the round trip to London and back, additional latency – or lag – is added to the connection between the two networks, and they both have to maintain core capacity up and down the UK to carry the traffic.”

Last year Commsworld completed its nationwide ultra-fast Optical Core Network, investing more than £10 million. It means Commsworld now operates the largest independently owned DWDM network, introducing itself as a new entrant to the national high-capacity backhaul market.
