Wide Area Networks (WANs)

From startups to national organisations - nowadays all businesses need to have a good connection to embrace the opportunities the digital age brings. A WAN can give you the advantage over your competitors.

The benefits of a WAN

Many companies and organisations choose to have a WAN connection because it helps them improve the service they offer, share information quickly and also reduce their costs.

There are numerous benefits of a dedicated, private WAN connection. For example, your business can:

  • Save money by sharing devices and applications
  • Improve collaboration due to effective file sharing
  • Access instant messaging
  • Keep data secure and backed up
  • Prioritise key applications, like voice
  • Use a reliable internet connection

At Commsworld, we offer two types of WAN connection - a wires-only Layer 2 VPLS or a fully managed Layer 3 VPN (L3VPN) solution.

What is Layer 3 VPN?

If you operate multiple sites across your organisation, you naturally want to be able to reach from your local network at one site to your local network at another. This might be between branches, from a branch to your datacentre, or even from your datacentre to your backup hosting in a public cloud (such as Amazon or Azure).

Our Layer 3 VPN service is a fully managed Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IPVPN) infrastructure than spans your entire organisation and beyond, giving you full any-to-any reachability across your estate.

End to end full management means the network performance can be managed centrally and we can offer a service-level agreement.

Our firewall is also available across all your sites and remotely, so your business will always be protected from cyber threat.

What is Layer 2 VPLS?

VPLS stands for Virtual Private LAN Service. Like L3VPN it provides any-to-any connectivity between sites, however it is delivered as a Layer 2 Ethernet service, which provides much more flexibility than your average Wide Area Network.

The easiest way to think of VPLS is like a big virtual Ethernet switch in the sky. Fluency provides an Ethernet-based connection to each of the customer’s sites, which connects you to the ‘switch’. Just like a managed Ethernet switch, each tail or ‘port’ can be configured however you like, but the basic principle is that they act as a pseudo-wire, i.e. they carry all the VLAN tags, Class-of-Service labels and any other data sent by your own Ethernet equipment to the other sites.

How does it work?

Our L3VPN and Layer 2 VPLS services are delivered over its fully owned and managed carrier-grade Fluency MPLS network, built on Juniper’s best-of-breed MX routing platform. Connectivity can be provided on a range of circuit types, available nationally and internationally using the Fluency on-net presence where it exists, and a wide array of 3rd party network operators where it doesn’t.

How much does WAN cost?

The price of WAN depends on your business requirements. We offer a number of flexible solutions, which are easily scaled, so your network can grow to accommodate your evolving business needs.

A range of financial models are available depending on the technologies utilised.
