Commsworld’s View on the CityFibre and Vodafone Breakthrough

10 November 2017

Momentous Partnership will see the UK’s ailing infrastructure finally light up – by Ricky Nicol

YESTERDAY’s announcement of a strategic partnership between CityFibre and Vodafone could just be the pivotal moment for the UK’s critically important network infrastructure.

The ambition to deliver pure fibre to five million homes by 2025 would represent a transformation on the current provision – where fewer than three per cent of premises benefit from fibre plumbed into the building.

For too long, too many people have had to accept Fibre to the Cabinet connections (with an outdated copper connection from the cabinet to the premises) - an increasingly inadequate solution.

So such an important moment for the UK’s infrastructure certainly warrants a reaction from us here at Commsworld. As we are Scotland’s largest independent telecoms firm - we have a great deal at stake.

But more so because Scotland – and the health of the UK’s digital network is critically important as we head into the digital global economy.

So as it happens, we are delighted with the partnership and its ambitions.

As a Premier Partner of CityFibre and having worked with them to deploy brand new gigabit connectivity into large areas of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen, we know exactly what can be achieved.

The UK has long been held back by poor investment in new Fibre connectivity and we are encouraged by this market disruptive approach and investment.  This is long overdue and will boost businesses and communities everywhere.

For those unfamiliar with the news, the key elements of this project are exceptional and are summarised in the announcement by CityFibre.

If you would like to know more about the significance of this announcement and the staggering potential of Fibre to the Premises, Commsworld’s Fluency Network – or any other related questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us on 0330 121 0000 or [email protected]
